Samuel de Champlain
In June 1613, Samuel lost a navigation device called a mariner’s astrolabe along the portage route around the Calumet rapids on the Upper Ottawa River.
What makes Samuel de Champlain historic to Whitewater Region? The astrolabe he lost on the river was discovered in 1867 right here in Cobden.
This essential navigation device belonged to the most celebrated cartographer and explorer of early Canadian History. To have such an extensive history mark take place here in our Region is fascinating.
The Cobden arena was named The Astrolabe Arena and the street the arena is located on is named Astrolabe Road as a way to commemorate the history.
